AMELIA BURKE

Director & Theatre Maker

Amelia is a director and theatre maker with a passion for creating and directing new Australian work. She is currently the Artistic Director of the Western Australian Youth Theatre Company (WAYTCo). 

 

Amelia's new work highlights include recently directing Frieda Lee's award-winning play All His Beloved Children at Kings Cross Theatre on Broadway.  In 2021, Amelia workshopped Maki Morita's Trash Pop Butterflies, Dance Dance Paradise (TPBDDP). In 2022, she directed a development of TPBDDP for the Midsumma Festival and a reading at forty five downstairs and in 2023, she directed a remount of TPBDDP for Theatre Works. In Perth, Amelia co-created and directed Cookies and Cream, a coming-of-age romp that delved into the inadequacies of sexual education in Australia, which also toured to Adelaide Fringe. She also co-created and produced Miss Westralia, an original musical about the first Miss Australia, which had a sell-out independent season and toured regional WA in 2021.

 

Amelia loves fusing her love of performance with her passion for making work with young people. She has had the pleasure of working as a teaching artist and director across the country with WAYTCo, National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), Filmbites Screen Academy and Super Speak. In 2022, she directed and co-wrote Meet My Grandies alongside a young cast for La Mama & the Victorian Seniors Festival.

 

Amelia is a graduate of the BPA in Performance Making from Western Australian Academy of Arts (WAAPA) nad the MFA Directing from NIDA.
